Previous articles in CONNECTIONS have reported on the Sponsor/SAH Survey undertaken by PRSN in early 2024. While the release of a report on the results of the survey was planned for the fall, we have taken a bit more time to prepare the report which we now plan to release in the first quarter of 2025.

These are four main issues that emerged from the survey:

Communication Gaps

Communication is not just about frequency, but about quality and clarity as well. Confusion over responsibilities is compounded by power dynamics. Sponsors need to be empowered to make them feel like equal partners in the sponsorship process.

Training Inconsistencies

Training is a complex issue that is fragmented among a number of actors in the refugee sponsorship space with topics ranging from pre-arrival preparation of applications to post-arrival settlement needs. PRSN has responded through its Lunch & Learns and Workshops.

Financial Strain

Many sponsors feel overwhelmed by the prospect of fundraising and are looking for guidance on how to do that effectively. Often that support is not available and leaves sponsors struggling to raise the funds for newcomers’ first year.

Emotional / Psychological Support

Sponsorship is emotionally demanding and can lead to strong feelings of isolation. Formal mechanisms of psychological support can be integrated with stronger peer networks, like PRSN.
