Amna, who spent years as a refugee in Malaysia before being privately sponsored to Canada, is currently a graduate student at the University of Toronto pursuing a Master of Health Sciences in Medical Genomics. She will offer insights on community engagement and provide strategies for supporting and empowering women that sponsors can use in their settlement practice.
Amna Shah has extensive experience in advocating for women’s rights and refugee support. With a background in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Nottingham, where she was honored as Valedictorian, Amna has dedicated nearly a decade to humanitarian causes. Her work spans issues such as sexual and gender-based violence, newcomer integration, and enhancing access to education and healthcare for refugees.
Currently serving as the Director of Opening Universities for Refugees, Amna leads initiatives to address the challenges faced by refugee students in higher education. Her involvement with the UNHCR Tertiary Education Task Team and contributions to the Refugee Education Council Canada’s short film showcased at the Global Refugee Forum 2023 highlight her commitment to social justice.
