The Private Refugee Sponsor Network (PRSN) is deeply concerned by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) recent announcement of a temporary pause on new applications from Groups of Five and Community Sponsors under the Private Sponsorship of Refugees (PSR) Program. This decision was made without any advanced notice or consultation, creating significant uncertainty for sponsors and refugees alike.

As a global leader in private refugee sponsorship, Canada’s commitment to supporting displaced individuals has been an inspiration worldwide. With record-breaking levels of forced displacement and ongoing conflicts, this kind of leadership is needed now more than ever. Abrupt decisions like this not only disrupt carefully laid plans but also delay critical support for refugees in need, diminishing Canada’s ability to respond effectively to this humanitarian crisis.

While we value IRCC’s efforts to enhance predictability for refugees abroad and sponsors in Canada, the manner in which this change was introduced underscores the need for greater communication and collaboration in the future.

PRSN remains steadfast in our commitment to supporting refugees and sponsors during this challenging time. We will continue working with our partners to address immediate needs, provide updates, and offer guidance to sponsors navigating the temporary pause.

We are eager to collaborate with IRCC on long-term program improvements to prevent such disruptions and strengthen Canada’s reputation as a global leader in refugee resettlement. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of refugees and build a more inclusive, welcoming Canada.
