Permanent resident (PR) cards are given to privately sponsored refugees upon arrival in Canada ensuring the card holders may return to Canada if they choose to travel outside the country. Does this card ever need to be renewed or is it a card good for all time? A family our group sponsored several years ago, wants to travel outside the country and is concerned about getting back into Canada.
- PR cards show an expiry date on the back of the card. If it’s due to expire in less than nine months, it’s highly recommended that the card holder get started on the renewal process as soon as possible before leaving Canada. This proactive step will ensure travel without any issues. A PR card is needed for valid re-entry into the country.
- The processing time for a completed renewal application currently takes approximately 73 days. Omitting required information can delay processing.
- The Government of Canada Permanent Residence Portal offers the most convenient and efficient way to renew a PR Card. You can access it at: https://prson-srpel.apps.cic.gc.ca/en/login
- The renewal fee is $50 per applicant. The web page has a document check-list to assist with the application. It is essential to keep all documents up-to-date.
- Once all application requirements have been met and the file has been successfully reviewed and approved, a new PR card provided will have a new expiration date.
- If urgent processing is needed and the card holder is eligible, learn more from https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/new-immigrants/pr-card/apply-renew-replace/urgent.html
- There is provision to apply for a special document if a card expires while the holder is outside Canada, but the process will take longer and a document will be needed to re- enter Canada if using airplane, train, bus, or boat. If returning by private vehicle, you may be able to provide other documents to Border Services.
