PRSN’s Knowledge Exchange Committee has been exploring issues surrounding sponsor relationships with sponsorship agreement holders (SAHs). The survey research has provided insights that will soon be published in a report in collaboration with the PRSN Partnership Committee. The report will help us better understand the issues and guide improvements to support more efficient and effective newcomer settlement. The key issue identified was the need for more open and effective communication along with a stronger focus on relationship-building.
Additional concerns identified include the need for equitable, accessible training opportunities, enhanced support for fundraising and finance; increased emotional and psychological supports; and improved feedback mechanisms to drive continuous improvement in the settlement process. Although the research focussed on sponsor and SAH interactions, the broader refugee sponsorship process can benefit from improvements, as it often depends on relationships between multiple stakeholders.
PRSN has already taken the lead in providing training and psychological support for sponsors. Our Network has developed a robust post-arrival education and training program and continues to expand by sharing experiences and fostering learning among sponsors. Initiatives like this survey aim to enhance communication between all key stakeholders in newcomer settlement and build stronger partnerships to support private sponsorship.
The report is expected to be released in Fall 2024. Stay tuned for its release on our website www.refugeesponsornet.ca
